Dating And Dogs

Recently, I went out on a date with a guy with whom I had some great conversations. We had a very nice date, except for the fact that at the end of the night, he said nothing about being in touch. Well, it turned out that I never heard from him since.

Understanding the Dating/Dog Dynamic

Many times, men (and women) will say they like dogs. However, that may mean they like them from a distance or like the novelty. To truly appreciate dogs, you have to be willing to accept that they're a part of that person's life. In retrospect, when the guy I was dating said "Must love Dogs huh?", I was surprised but had quickly interjected that it should be "must tolerate". He had said that comment with no smile or in a joking manner, but more in an annoyed way.
So, I guess my point is that many people will say it, but when push comes to shove, they don't stand behind it.

Seeing The Positive

While it's disappointing to think that I won't meet another because they won't be tolerant of dogs, I just can't look at the situation that way. Instead, I look at my dogs as a detector of true dog lovers and posers. This guy turned out to be a poser. After the initial disappointment lifted, I'm better off without this person in the long run. Each person you meet that doesn't work out, brings you closer to the one person who does.

Let's Discuss!

Have you encountered a dog-loving poser in your dating trials and tribulations?

  1. When I was dating, after my divorce I didn't yet have a dog, so it never came up. Luckily my husband had a black lab that he took wonderful care of and after his passing, we got Oskar.

I don't think I'd want to be with a person who doesn't like dogs!

    1. You never realize how much of a factor it is until a guy comes into the picture. I guess some guys want just as much of say in the decision. To me, a dog is a dog and it shouldn't matter but what can you do? You were lucky not to deal with that. I feel the same way. Thank you for commenting.

  2. When I started seeing Dana waaaaay back when, I had a roommate with two cats. Dana was allergic to cats, even though she genuinely enjoyed them, and I was afraid that would become an issue. Fortunately it didn't - at least not for Dana. It was one of the CATS, Sophie, who had a problem with Dana! Sophie was used to sleeping with me, so she got really bent out of shape when Dana slept with me instead (with the bedroom door closed). It was a sleepless night, with Sophie meowing and banging on the door all night...

In a prior incident with that same cat, I was seeing someone who also loved cats, but was totally inept at approaching them, and made them feel threatened - they'd hiss and yowl at her when she'd reach out to pet them. This woman was also inept at dealing with me (and people in general), and our time together didn't last long. It seemed like the cats' negativity towards her was a sign!

    1. I agree. Sometimes our pets can see things in the people we're dating that we don't realize. I guess sometimes our pets get protective and possessive of us. Ultimately, you have to set the ground rules first because it's harder to retrain an animal to do something new compared to what they're used to. Thanks so much for your comments.
