Some security companies have taken this into account by creating motion-activated barking dog alarms. When a person approaches your door, it will activate a bark that will get louder the closer a person approaches. These alarms cost much less than a full-scale alarm system and are simple to set up.

Brilliant invention - absolutely. When I lived in Cicero, my house got broken into around 1996 or so. I asked the cop who investigated what I could do to deter future break-ins, and he suggested getting a dog. There are some people out there who think that keeping a gun around is the best deterrent, but in reality a gun won't stop a burglar from getting _into_ your house. A dog probably will.
