Dog Shaming

Photo: Dog Shaming

There are times that we get into our embarrassing situations. Sometimes, it's out of panic, sometimes it's out of fear and other times we just don't think. When we have those days, it takes time to bounce back.

Dogs are no different when they find themselves in embarrassing. They wind up chewing our favorite shoe, taking our spot on the sofa,or just love sneaking food when they know they shouldn't. It's for these reasons that Dog Shaming was created. Creating in August, 2012 it already has over 281 webpages of pictures.

It's a simple website where people post photos of their dog with a note attached stating why they're being shamed. One of my favorites was this one by Oscar as seen above. Homer has definitely earned a spot on that website, but his owner has never gotten around to taking a picture of him with a note stating what he did wrong.

At first, I thought the idea of dog shaming was a little harsh. Then I realized, as much as we love our pooches, they do have a knack for getting into trouble. It's part of the package when we adopt them. Some dogs never do anything wrong and others are remembered for their naughty acts of the past. One of the coolest things about this website is when foster moms put their dogs pictures up there to help them find a forever home. It's a reminder of how crafty certain dogs can really be, but at the end of it all, we still love them.

Coupaw

Hi Everyone! Happy Valentine's Day! I was really excited to come across this website called Coupaw. Created Exclusively for pets, it offers specials to pet owners by receiving their e-mail newsletter or checking out their website. Similar to Groupon or Living Social, this is a great way for pet owners to find unique deals on anything pet related.

The company started from a simple idea. Last summer, one of the founders of FamilyPet.com had move to New York City. Having come across a fantastic dog walker, this individual raved about the business to all of his friends. In appreciation of the extra business, the dog walking company gave him a huge discount. The idea for Coupaw was soon born.

Now, a national phenomenon, Coupaw offers deals for cities all over the country. Even if you don't live in one of the cities they cover, they have national offers as well. Signing up is easy too. You can either sign up for an account at the website or use your Facebook information to log on to the site.

Pet Friendly Hotels

There are sometimes you want to get away and stay in a hotel but can't find one that will take your pet. That's why I was so thrilled to find PetFriendlyHotels.com.

Based in England, PetFriendlyHotels.com started out in Europe and later expanded to North America and the other continents. It provides the owner with an overview of the hotel and even has pet travel tips.

It's nice to know that if I ever want to take the dogs on vacation, I'll be able to find a good hotel quicklyThat's why this resource is my Website of the Week.

Battlepug, A New Breed Of Comics

The Original Battlepug

The Dawn Of A Web Comic

I was reading an illustration weblog the other day when I discovered the web comic called Battlepug. Coming across this comic I was tickled pink. Who would ever imagine a pug as a superhero? It is such an original idea.

As a kid, I would read comics here and there. As an adult, I discovered how cool and exciting superheroes could be through my teenage nephew Stan's enthusiasm for comic books. Seeing the movies that were inspired by the comics my nephew read, I realized that great writing can produce fantastic movies.

Battlepug started running in February and has had quite a following. It begins with a naked woman (who's tastefully drawn) reading the story of Battlepug to her two dogs — Colfax, a French bulldog, and Mingo, a pug. Each dog has its own unique personality that shines through.

It tells the story of a young boy who is orphaned by his parents and what happens after. We have yet to meet Battlepug, but that seems to be just around the corner. The story is quite enjoyable, so I don't mind the wait.

How It Began

Mike Norton, the creator, has always loved pugs and owns two of his own. He was approached by iFanboy to provide to create a signature t-shirt for a new line of merchandise. Since Mike worked exclusively for DC comics, all the artwork he did had no original properties he could use. From that, came the idea of Battlepug.

More Than Just Comics

If you visit the Battlepug website, you will see other valiant pug photos called Friday's Battlepugs which is submitted by its fans. It also has some cool fan art as well. They even sell t-shirts for both men and women. Each comic has a blog post to go with it that tells you what the writer is up to every week.

This is a comic that I look forward to reading every week.

Lost and Found Pets America

There's nothing worse than when you lose a pet. There are many lost and found websites out there. One that has stood out is Lost And Found Pets America. A small group of individuals and businesses band together from a passion to reunite owners with their missing pets. This selflessness is why they're website of the week.

This website provides free found ads to those who have found a pet and low-cost lost ads to those folks who have lost their pet. They work along with other websites to make it possible to bring a pet home.

How It Began

Lost and Found Pets America started out because a little Pomeranian named BearBear went missing one day. Luckily, BearBear was found and has had a happy ending.

Help Bring A Pet Home

Right now, shelters, animal rescue groups and individuals can benefit too. This website is having a special contest to bring lost pets home.

  • If you are a shelter or animal rescue group and you are the first to post 5 found ads, the group who does that will win a $100 gift card to the online pet supply or vet supply site of their choice.
  • Also, if you are a bird or parrot rescue group and are the first to post 5 found ads, the bird rescue group who does so will also receive a $100 gift card to the online pet supply or vet supply site of their choice.
  • If you are an individual that can name their 3 favorite websites, send them an e-mail. They can be animal advocacy or pet-loving websites. Two winners will receive (according to their judges) a $25.00 Amazon gift card.

For more information, check out the contest link. Winners will be announced the first week of June.

The Magic Bullet Fund

There's nothing worse than seeing someone you love fighting cancer. It can be even more difficult when it's a little dog who can't talk but handles its pain with the greatest of dignity.

Now there's an organization that can help if you are having financial difficulties with paying your medical bills for fighting canine cancer. It's called The Magic Bullet Fund. This organization was named after Laurie Kaplan's dog Bullet. Grateful that she was able to care for Bullet while he was fighting cancer, she wondered what happened if she couldn't afford the treatment and realized she would be brokenhearted.

How The Program Works

With the cost of cancer treatments these days, this organization will give financial aid from $600 USD to $6,000 USD. If you are a primary caretaker or a shelter/rescue group can apply for aid for your ailing dog. You dog must fall into the proper age and weight range. They provide assistance for tumor removal surgery or chemotherapy treatments (there are specific requirements for chemotherapy treatments).

A Difference Is Made

This organization has helped over 100 dogs fight cancer and extend their life. It's a great resource for other similar funds for this reason. The volunteers who run this website are true heroes who dedicate their lives to making dogs' lives better. If you would like to help, you can donate to them or visit their website store.

Let's Discuss!

Did you know anyone in this situation? How have you been affected by a dog fighting cancer? Personally, seeing Elvis battle cancer was horrifying because he had such an aggressive form that hit him so quickly.

Note To Readers

I haven't been writing as much because of school and work demands. I hope to be back in full force next week and will try to get an additional post up over the weekend. Thank you all for your support and I hope you are having a great week.

Laura's Struggle With Hemangiosarcoma

Recently, I came across this fascinating website that is definitely my Website Of The Week. It was created this past January by the owner of Laura, a Doberman Pinscher/Italian Greyhound mix who is battling Splenic Hemangiosarcoma. She is ten years-old and was diagnosed with Splenic Hemangisarcoma.

What Is Splenic Hemangiosarcoma?

Splenic Hemangiosarcoma is a cancer that affects the dog's spleen. Other types of Hemangiosarcoma affect the skin, soft tissue or the liver. It is an aggressive cancer that is quite common in dogs. However, dogs do not show that there is anything wrong until the tumor is very large (comparable to the size of a golf ball).

What happens is the tumor grows being filled up with blood vessels from the dog's body. As a result, the tumor feeds off of the blood vessels and grows faster. The dog gets anemia from all those blood cells feeding the tumor.

What's Special About Laura

It is rare with that a dog will survive long after the diagnosis. In fact, because of her chemotherapy treatments, her life expectancy is currently 145 to 178 days (mean survival, 271 days). Her dad is determined to beat the odds and make it possible for his dog to have the best quality of life she can. It wouldn't surprise me if she defies these odds.

Follow Laura's Journey

You can learn more about this courageous canine through her blog. It is an incredible read and very informational about what happens in the life of a cancer patient.

Laura is fighting this disease using traditional western medicine like chemotherapy and specialized holistic treatment as well. What's even more amazing is the fact her dad has given her special diet formulated to give her the best food to fight this cancer. So far, I'm happy to say, so good. She has her good and bad days like any cancer patient would, but carries herself with dignity, joy and the love of life that is inherent in dogs.

Another Dog Affected By Cancer

My dog Cosmo had died of a tumor that affected his spleen. His symptoms were very similar to Laura's but we never had an official diagnosis. I didn't have a doctor that addressed my concerns during that time. When we discovered he had cancer after all, it was too late.

Learn More About Canine Cancer

I recently came across some useful articles that I feel tie in well with Laura's Story. It is an article written on the Vet Tech Blog called 10 Dog Foods that May Lead to Cancer.

While we can't predict if our dog will get cancer or not, this article has good insight on what foods should be avoided. You don't think much about this until it happens.

Cute Dogs Daily

I always get excited when I come across a new dog-friendly website. This is the case for Cute Dogs Daily. The goal of the website is to submit cute photos or videos of your dog. What's even better is that they are having a Cutest Dog of 2010 Contest. You submit a picture of your dog. The owner of the winning dog will receive a $75 gift card to PetSmart. If you have that perfect photo of your dog, it's something to consider.

Here's an adorable video of a pug puppy looking at itself in the mirror that you can see on the website or right here...

Athletic Pets

Athletic Pets Website

I remember when I came across some Chicago Cubs leashes for Cookie and Gigi at a local pet boutique. I was so excited that I didn't mind that they looked like they were for male dogs. I was just happy to find them.

When you live in a big city, it may be commonplace to find these items but many people in the United States live to far from a big city. That's why I love this website. It's called Athletic Pets and has been online since 2006 when Maceo's owner was looking for a dog collar in support of his favorite sports team. Since then, they have hundreds of products for various sports leagues. These teams are primarily American and include: MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, NCAA and NASCAR.

Depending on the team, they offer bandanas, collars, leashes and even ID tags. Their prices are reasonable and free shipping is available for purchases of $75 USD or more. If you have a family member or friend who's a die-hard sports fan, this may be a website to check out.

Let's Discuss!

Are you a huge sports fan? Do you have your pet show its team support?

Website Of The Week: Dogtoys.com

Dog toys are huge for dogs these day. Not only do they keep dogs from getting bored, they can keep your dog from being self-destructive when you're away. I was excited to find this website called dogtoys.com. This online retail store is based in Pennsylvania but ships all over the world. It's nice to see that they have no limitations holding them back when it comes to sending products to their customers.

What Makes Them Different

There are a couple of other things about this website that make it stand out. They offer eco-friendly dog toys as well as the classics. They have a donation program where you can buy a toy and donate it to their animal shelter program. They even give you the option to shop by dog breed, size, or alphabetically by brand. They offer a birthday club which give you special discounts for your birthday.

Hello there. This week, I discovered a website called The Daily Puppy. It's a fun website that has the coolest pictures of different puppies. It has a section called the Puppy Showdown which one can vote on the puppy that you think is cuter. Plus it has a special section for those dogs that are grown up too.

With spring just around the corner, it's a popular time for getting puppies. What makes this website standout even more is the fact that it has some really informative articles on puppies as well. It's been awhile since they have written a new articles but the ones they have on there is great for reference.

Ruff Riding Through The Economy

Recession Blues

Recession Blues

The website of the week is RuffRide.com. The other day, I learned about this website while I was on Twitter. It is a website that was created to help people deal with the effects of the recession through humor.

Be Prepared This website made me smile when I first saw it. The recession has been tough. It's been hard to find a good job. If you're not out looking for a job, then you may be working in a job where you've felt the aftereffects of being downsized.

These dogs have little witticisms that help you cope. All of these witticisms are illustrated by pets.

One of my favorites is "I'm in heavy need of inspiration"(pictured right). If you click on the website quote, it will have a section where you can see more photos. One that I loved was Recession got you boxed in? Another favorite is I'd really like someone to blame.

Lifes Joke

In addition to postcards, the website also sells calendars, prints, and a photo book. All the prices are very reasonable. There is also a page where you can download free wallpapers for your computer and iPhone. Still, this is a cool place to surf and click. The expressions of these dogs are just priceless and the shots tare very clever.

If you would like to learn more about this fascinating website, go to RuffRide.com.

Let's Discuss!

Even though our country is going through a tough time, we can't let things get us down. So, I was wondering, what are some of your favorite witticisms? What are ways you're coping with the current economy? What do you like to do to beat stress?

*Special Thanks to Micah Dougherty and RuffRide.com for providing the photos.

Website of the week

Have you ever had a moment where you found the most adorable puppy but had no idea of what to name him or her? Well there is a website called Puppynamer.com. It was started when the owner first got a puppy and didn't know what to name him. If you select the winning name, you get $10.00. The best thing about this site is that all of the proceeds go to charity. The person whose puppy is being named doesn't have to go with the most popular choice but at least it gives them an idea. Also, giving a puppy a name is just plain fun. They have the cutest pictures on there like the ones of this one...
