4 Apps That Help You Go Cruelty Free

Day in and day out, animals are continuously being tested for various reasons. Some are tested for medical purposes, others are tested to see if household products are harmful. Worse yet, many animal are tested so that cosmetic companies can sell their products.

When it comes to dogs, beagles are chosen for animal testing more than any other breed. There are over 65,000 dogs and 20,000 cats in labs in the United States alone. In England, 94.7% of dogs that are using in animal testing are beagles. This is because of their gentleness, trusting nature and ability to forgive easily. 95% of animals are not protected by animal legislation in the United States. The Beagle Freedom Project has been working to free beagles from a laboratory and a life destined for euthanasia by banding together to help legislators find these dogs a home.

Cruelty Free Apps

While we are unable to only hope that more legislation succeeds in giving these animals a loving home, we can control the products that we buy on a daily basis. Some apps even offer a scanning feature to help you find out right in the store if an item is cruelty-free or not. For all of you who own iPhone and Android smartphones, you can download the following apps.

Cruelty Cutter

Cruelty Cutter is an app that promotes a cruelty-free lifestyle. It's free to download. This app was created exclusively for the Beagle Freedom Project. It offers many features including, a pledge to shop cruelty-free, doggie dollars which give the recipients discounts from their monthly sponsors once they've accumulated a certain amount and bite back, which allows you to communicate with cruelty-friendly companies to campaign for the welfare of animals.

Cruelty-Free

Cruelty-Free is another app that makes it easier to navigate through the animal testing waters. This app is available for both iPhone and Android smart phones.

Bunny Free

Bunny Free was created by Graduate Student Margaret Pearce as a special project for PETA. The app will scan products and let you know if they're animal friendly or not. PETA also provides the data information for the app.

Choose Cruelty Free

Choose Cruelty Free is an app that was created for our friends who live across the world. Since the organization is based in Australia, most of the products researched will be pick up products in that continent. This may be handy for cruelty-free lifestyle pursuers in New Zealand and parts of Asia as well.

It's Not Hard To Be Cruelty Free

Living the cruelty free lifestyle isn't the easiest thing in the world. Many times, companies will find a way around the animal testing laws and pretend they are cruelty-free, but really have just found a loophole. You don't need to be a vegan or vegetarian to help end animal cruelty, but by choosing carefully which products you'd like to purchase is a great step to take.

The Ultimate In Animal Cruelty

When I was a kid, I would always gasp when I would see a man tying up a women and leaving her on the railroad tracks. This would often be the case in silent movies or cartoons, but I knew that she would be saved in a nick of time. I couldn't imagine another outcome.

Well, some heartless dog abuser has proven me wrong. On Friday, August 9, this nameless mystery of a being took 3 dogs and tied them to the tracks. There was an oncoming train coming. It was bad enough that the person left them to die. But this sick individual took things one step further; he recorded it through either by taking pictures or recording it.

The lone dog who survived was a female who is mixed breed who is 22 pounds and 14 inches high. She was wearing a pink collar which means that she was part of someone's family. She has benn named Chessie. There is a $5,000 USD reward from PETA.

Reunited And It Feels So Good

Remember the story about the dog who was senselessly tossed out the window of a moving car? There's a happy ending for him after all.

Originally known as Ralphie by the staff at the Dupage County Animal Shelter, his real name is Bentley. Adopted as a puppy by Guillermo Roman(pictured right), this dog happened to slip through the slats on the fence one day when he was in the yard. His owner searched everywhere and had no luck.

Later, he had seen the news one day and realized that this puppy was Bentley. He called the shelter to let them know he was the rightful owner. It turned out that he and the man responsible for dropping the dog out the window lived on the same street in Chicago. After the waiting period was over, Guillermo was reunited with his nine month-old dog.

He paid for the animal's neutering, something he was planning to do but hadn't done yet before Bentley escaped. This dog had a unique blood disorder where he needed a transfusion which Guillermo had done first. Happily, Bentley has also been microchipped so if the little guy ever gets lost again, he'll be easily found.

Justice Has Been Served

What happened to the person who dropped Bentley out the window? Sergiu Muresan, a 26 year-old man has been charged with cruel treatment of an animal. This misdemeanor charge can result in a $2,500 fine and up to a year of jail time, for him.

Another Brilliant Move By A Genius Dog Owner

I was watching the news yesterday and was in utter shock when I head about a young puppy who was thrown out of the window of a moving car. The male puppy, an Australian Cattle Dog mix between six and eight months old survived. He was found by some employees of X Sport Fitness, who then called authorities. The road where this dog was discovered is a busy one. The speed is 40 miles(64 kph) per hour on that road. That young puppy is extremely lucky. The Elmhurst, Illinois police are not going to rest until they arrest this reprehensible coward. The dog is safe but not up for adoption at this time but probably will be soon.

Sadly, this isn't the only time an incident like this has happened. In Louisville, Kentucky, this past September some cruel person dropped a young female dog out a car window while driving. This was a major expressway where cars travel at 65 miles per hour (105 kph). "Hope" (pictured above) survived but had severe injuries as a result. The cost for her surgery was $12,000. She had been severely abused, and is very lucky to be alive. She had spinal injuries from this and it was questionable that she would survive. Almost three months later, this young girl is in foster care and still has a cast on her broken left hind leg. She is extremely shy around new people and surroundings. The primary goal is to restore her lost muscle mass since she has been on bed rest for so long.

The animal shelter to where she was taken has been deluged with adoption requests. There is also an $8,000 dollar reward from the Louisville police as well as, a $2,500 dollar reward from the American Humane Association leading to the apprehension of the individual responsible for this travesty.

Making Sense Of The Senseless

I will never understand what drives a human being to do such heinous acts like this to a dog. If I ever came across these people, I would love to ask them "Why?". Dogs don't ask to be taken in, we do it because we want them in our lives. I will never understand what drives a person to this. One bad act that happens in the blink of an eye, changes a dog's life forever.

Hope and the little puppy are the lucky ones. Many others don't have such a happy ending.

How Could Someone Do That To Pookie?

It never ceases to amaze me how people can be so cruel to animals. This was especially so on Veteran's day in Greensville, South Carolina —a day where we recognize the armed forces who serve our country—where someone set fire to a sweet 14 year-old dog called Pookie, whose only desire was to serve his family with love. He was the type of dog to keep to himself and didn't hurt anyone. All he did is mind his own business sitting outside in his doghouse while watching the owner's house.

Yet some pathetic shell of a human being set this dog (a collie-chow mix) on fire in his doghouse, his head pinned under a cinder block. The dog was badly burned but rescued in time. He will need surgery to repair the severe damage to his head and face. Both of his corneas have been damaged, so there is a possibility he will go blind because of the scarring. He will have a long, slow recovery ahead of him, thanks to this spineless coward. He's improved steadily and is not as skittish today as he was yesterday.

To date, there has been no suspect implicated in this heinous crime. The only lead the police have is that a person saw a tall, thin man hanging around the doghouse moments before the fire started. I only hope there was a witness out there to bring this poor dog the justice that he deserves.

Good News

The good news to come out of Pookie's plight is the overwhelming support of the public to help donate money to cover the surgery costs. He will also be adopted out to a good home, since his owner, Mable Ramey can no longer afford to keep him. At least, he will spend his golden years being treated like a king.

If you would like to pictures of how this dog is doing, you will want to check out the WYFF Website . If you would like to make a donation, please call Animal Care Services in Greenville at 864-467-3954. I didn't post the pictures due to the fact that they are very graphic.
